Pendulums: Why Do Things Swing?
Explore pendulum physics with an interactive simulator. Learn why pendulums swing and what affects their speed!

Have You Ever Wondered?
Why does a swing in the playground go back and forth? Why do grandfather clocks tick? The answer is: pendulums!
A pendulum is simple — it’s just a weight hanging from a string. But the physics is really cool!
What Makes a Pendulum Swing?
When you lift the weight to one side and let go, gravity pulls it back down. But because it’s on a string, it doesn’t fall straight — it swings in an arc. Then it goes up the other side, slows down, and comes back. And again, and again…
Try the Simulator!
Play with the pendulum below — change the length, gravity, and starting angle:
What Did You Discover?
Here are some cool things to notice:
1. Length Matters! 📏
Longer pendulums swing slower. Shorter ones swing faster. This is why a grandfather clock has a long pendulum — it keeps perfect time!
2. Gravity Pulls Harder! 🌍
If you increase gravity, the pendulum swings faster. On the Moon (less gravity), the same pendulum would swing much slower!
3. The Period Formula ⏱️
The time for one complete swing (called the period) is:
T = 2 × π × √(L / g)
Where:
- T = period (seconds)
- L = length (meters)
- g = gravity (m/s²)
- π ≈ 3.14159
4. Small Angles vs Big Angles
For small angles (less than about 20°), the period is almost the same no matter what angle you start from. But for big angles, it changes a bit. This is called small angle approximation — try it in the simulator!
Real World Pendulums
Pendulums are everywhere:
- Playground swings — you are the pendulum!
- Clocks — pendulums keep time
- Metronomes — help musicians keep rhythm
- Earthquake detectors — detect tiny vibrations
Try This at Home!
Make your own pendulum:
- Tie a small weight to a string
- Hang it from a door handle
- Pull it to the side and let go
- Time how long 10 swings take with a phone stopwatch
- Divide by 10 to find the period!
Now change the string length and try again. What happens? 🔬
