Type a message, watch the LED blink it in Morse code, hear the beeps, and learn how dots and dashes work! By Nitvi
Can you decode this Morse code message?
Morse code turns every letter into a pattern of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals). It was invented by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s โ almost 200 years ago!
The clever part: the most common letters get the shortest codes. E is just one dot . and T is just one dash -. But Q is much longer: --.-
| Signal | How long |
|---|---|
| . dot (dit) | 1 unit |
| - dash (dah) | 3 units |
| gap inside a letter | 1 unit |
| gap between letters | 3 units |
| gap between words | 7 units |
SOS does not stand for "Save Our Souls" โ that was made up later! SOS was chosen because ... --- ... is the easiest pattern to recognize, even through noise and static.
Morse code is like the great-great-grandparent of computer binary โ just two signals (short and long) can spell any word in the world! ๐
